Marine Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a technology that allows vessels to communicate their location and information to other ships and shore stations. This system enhances maritime safety and helps manage maritime traffic effectively. Understanding the features of a Marine AIS system is crucial for both maritime professionals and enthusiasts.

What is AIS?

Key Features of Marine AIS

One of the primary features of the Marine AIS system is its real-time tracking capability. By utilizing GPS technology, ships can broadcast their MMSI Identification, position, course, and speed to nearby vessels and coastal authorities, making navigation safer by preventing collisions. Additionally, Marine AIS systems can display essential information such as the vessel’s name and dimensions, which further aids in identifying ships in a congested area. your text here...20

Benefits of Utilizing AIS Technology

AIS technology also provides significant benefits in terms of search and rescue operations. In emergencies, the system allows for swift identification of vessel locations, improving response times. Overall, the integration of AIS technology enhances safety, efficiency, and communication on the water.

AIS & MMSI SETUP AND PROGRAMMING

AIS programming requires a Maritime Mobile Service Identity registration. An MMSI is a 9-digit number programmed into DSC radios and AIS units to identify your vessel to other boaters and the U.S. Coast Guard in an emergency. All modern marine radios feature Digital Selective Calling (DSC) for routine operations and for automated distress hailing.

U.S. recreational boaters in domestic waters can get a free or low-cost MMSI via BoatUS. Vessels traveling internationally or commercial boats have different requirements.

Programming Automatic Identification System (AIS) transceivers with vessel-specific data (MMSI) is restricted in the U.S., and allowed only by authorized marine electronics dealers, installers, or manufacturers to ensure regulatory compliance. Proof of MMSI registration is required for all AIS purchases.

AIS transceivers are configured with a vessel's MMSI number, vessel name, call sign (if required), and vessel dimensions, via the manufacturers programming software. An MMSI is not required for AIS RECEIVE ONLY devices, it is required for transmission with Class A, B and B+ transceivers.

AIS Programming Steps

  • Obtain your MMSI: You must have a Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number, which will get programmed into the device for identification.

  • Complete and submit the AIS Registration Form.

  • The AIS transceiver will be programmed and tested prior to shipping.

  • Once you receive your new AIS, install and test the AIS device: Connect the transceiver to your VHF radio via an antenna splitter, or a dedicated antenna.

You will want to connect to your chartplotter to be able to view and identify other vessels or even place radio calls via the DSC function in your marine radio. Instructions are provided to help with most any installation.

If your chartplotter does not support AIS, an inexpensive tablet or PC can be used over the NMEA or WiFi network in most AIS transceivers.

How much does it cost?

Our pricing varies depending on shipping location, features, special configurations, and current markets. We offer a variety of options to fit your needs and budget.

Important Considerations

  • Reprogramming Limitations: If the MMSI is entered incorrectly, the device must be returned to the manufacturer to be reset.

  • Required Data: The AIS will not transmit until it is programmed with an MMSI, without an MMSI it will act only as a receiver (silent mode).
